Background & History
The Coopersville/Polkton Fire Department was originally established in 1915 as a city-run department. On July 1, 1990, the City of Coopersville and Polkton Township entered into an interlocal agreement to form a joint Fire Authority.
In 2019, the Fire Authority integrated with Coopersville Rescue, a City-funded first response agency. Since then, annual call volume has grown significantly—from about 200 calls to over 800 last year.
After nearly 25 years of planning, the Fire Authority opened a new fire station in 2020, replacing two outdated stations previously located in the township and city.
Today, the Fire Authority serves a population of approximately 7,400 residents across 44 square miles. While much of the area is agricultural, most residents live within the City of Coopersville. The department also covers a 10-mile stretch of divided highway that connects Grand Rapids and Muskegon—an area that sees more than 41,000 vehicles daily.
The department is staffed by a full-time Fire Chief (since 2022), a full-time Firefighter/EMT-B (added in 2024), and 19 dedicated paid-on-call firefighters and medical responders.
